Sounds Like Change

Lunch break was one of your favorite parts of any work day. You spend a lot of time at work taking calls and just being generally busy all day, so your one hour of alone time was really special to you. Today you had decided to head just down the street to one of your favorite cafes for lunch. While you were eating, there was the faint sound of music in the background. You don’t remember the cafe ever playing music before, so it must be a new thing. For most of your time in the cafe the music simply blends into the background noise of the place, however one song strangely caught your ear. You didn’t recognize it at first, but you found yourself absentmindedly tapping your foot to the beat. After a few moments you finally recognized it as a Taylor Swift song, ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ or something like that. You don’t hate the song or anything, but it's just not the type of music you really listen to. Despite that, you find yourself humming the song for minutes after it finished. Maybe it's time to get some headphones to block out the noise next time so you can be truly at peace on your break. Normally you’d just leave that thought for later, but it stuck in your head until you grabbed your phone and started looking for a pair. You wanted just a regular pair of earbuds to plug into your phone, but something drew you to the Apple AirPods. Even though you have an Android phone, you find yourself making the impulse purchase. Once the purchase is done, you decide to put it out of your mind and continue your break time as usual.

Eventually your lunch comes to a close and you walk back down the street to your office. The whole way there you find yourself once again humming that Taylor Swift song. At this point you don’t really care, the song is kind of growing on you in fact. “Ooh, look what you made me do.” You sing to yourself as you enter your office. As you sit down at your desk, you see something a bit confusing on your desk.

You had only just ordered AirPods right? But if that is the case, how could there be a pair sitting here on your desk already? As you ask yourself how this is possible, you pick them up and slip them into your ears. They fit very comfortably, and a familiar feeling washes over you as you wear them. You kind of just shrug off the mystery, as you must have just misremembered when you bought them. There’s no reason to wear headphones and not listen to music though, so before you start work again you pull up Spotify on your phone and look for something to listen to you. Your regular music isn’t sounding that interesting today, so you decide to leave it up to Spotify’s algorithm and just click on your Discover Weekly playlist.

It takes a minute to start playing for some reason, but once you’ve gotten back into your work, a song starts up. You don’t recognize it at first, but after the singer comes in, you can clearly tell it's Ariana Grande. You look down at your phone and see its a song called ‘Dangerous Woman.’ You’re a bit confused as to why Spotify thinks you would want to hear this song, but as it goes on you realize it is pretty catchy. You were initially going to skip it, but you’re getting pretty into it now. You don’t realize it, but as the song goes on and you start to hum along, your hair is growing longer and longer. Soon, blonde locks are spilling down from your head and resting on your shoulders. It doesn’t stay still for long though, as it quickly wraps itself up into a high ponytail.

Once the song was finished, the playlist transitioned back into the genres you typically listen to. In between songs though, you occasionally sing under your breath, “Somethin' 'bout you makes me feel like a dangerous woman. Somethin' 'bout, somethin' 'bout, somethin' 'bout you.” Every time you catch yourself doing it you chuckle. They really do engineer these pop songs to be earworms these days.

After a while, you’ve gotten fully invested in your work again as the music becomes just background noise. That focus is broken slightly however when you hear another pop song begin to play. You recognize this one a bit faster as it's relatively recent. Flashes of Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie in various colorful outfits fill your mind as their song ‘Me!’ plays in your ears. You didn’t think you had seen the music video for it, but there's no way you could remember these scenes if you hadn’t so you must have watched it at some point. As the song plays, you begin to tap your foot along. With each tap your body shrinks slightly. You’re losing inches off of your height and around your waist as well. Each chorus that comes and goes leaves you with a more feminine figure. By the end of the song, your body looks just like that of a flat chested woman.

After that song ends, the playlist begins transitioning slowly into more and more pop songs. You’ve got a few that break the genre, but for the most part it's becoming all pop songs. In fact, only a few songs later, you hear Taylor Swift’s voice once again. As the song begins you’re immediately hit with a wave of nostalgia. “I stay out too late, got nothin' in my brain, that's what people say, mmm hmm, that's what people say, mmm hmm.” You sing along as you remember back to when ‘Shake it Off’ came out. You have some real fond memories of blasting this song with your friends back in high school. There is a quick moment though where you question those memories. You weren’t in high school in 2014 were you? What you don’t realize is that you’re no longer 30 years old anymore. As the playlist has gotten more dominated by pop, the years have been melting away and you’re now only 22 years old. The song nears its end and you’re still humming along, playing with your AirPods case with your free hand. You smile as you look down at it and see the cute case you got for it.

You always felt like the plain white case was boring, so when your parents bought you AirPods as a reward for good grades in college, you obviously had to buy a cute case to go with them!

You’ve been working for a while now, and it seems like your drinks from lunch are catching up with you. Once you reach a stopping point in your work, you grab your phone and head off to the bathroom to relieve yourself. Without thinking you entered into the ladies restroom and headed into a stall. You’re only in there a short time, but while you are, a new song comes on that you start singing along to almost immediately. “I love it when you call me señorita, I wish I could pretend I didn't need ya, but every touch is ooh la la la, it's true, la la la, ooh, I should be running, ooh, you keep me coming for ya.” As you sing, your voice raises in pitch, settling out at a beautifully feminine pitch. It's clear you are not an amateur singer too.

When you exit the stall, you see a purse sitting on the counter by the sinks. You chuckle to yourself when you recognize it as your own purse that you must have left there on accident before entering the stall. After washing your hands you grab your purse and decide to touch up your makeup. As you apply it to your still masculine face, that masculinity slowly drains away as your features soften. Your lips plump as you apply lipstick, and your eyes sparkle as you touch up your mascara. Once you’re happy with your makeup, your smile to yourself in the mirror and head back out to your desk.

On your way back to your desk, you pass straight by the office you had been working in before. As you pass it you almost enter it, but stop yourself and continue on. They don’t give the interns full offices like that, so you’re not sure why you almost went into one. You leave that thought behind and sit down at your cubicle and get back to work. They don’t give you too much to do as an intern, so you’re able to be on your phone for a bit and not get behind on your work. When you open your phone you’re greeted with the Spotify app still open as your music is still playing. You giggle as you see the playlist you’re listening to is now one that you made yourself called ‘Songs for when work sux.’

You open up Instagram and begin to scroll through your timeline. As you’re liking photos and leaving comments, another song comes on that makes you feel nostalgic. You hum along as your favorite song plays. “You’ll believe god is a woman.” You sing along with Ariana Grande under your breath. When this song came out, you and your friends listened to it non stop! You were all so excited when it was announced her tour was coming to your city, and you begged your parents to let you go. You had just turned 18 so they finally let you go to a concert without them! Man those were good memories, singing along with Ariana for real. You scroll back through your account and find the photo you posted that day. “Going to see Ariana today!!!!” The caption read.

As you reminisce, your chest begins to swell. It grows and grows until you’ve got quite a bit of cleavage on display. Normally your boss wouldn’t let people show this much chest, but that rule only applies to the older women in the office. There’s no way your boss would turn down the opportunity to see cleavage on a 20 year old woman!

‘God is a Woman’ comes to an end and you sigh. Unfortunately it's time to get back to work. Your work at the company isn’t hard, but you’d much rather spend your summer break at the beach with your friends or partying with Colin from your Psychology class, but this internship will look good on a resume so you suck it up. Maybe later you’ll text Colin and see if he can hang out after work.

A few hours and plenty of pop songs later, the work day is over. You clock out and make your way to your car. As you drive home you plug your phone into the aux and set your playlist named, “Finally work is over” to play on shuffle. You squeal in excitement as your absolute favorite song ever starts to play. You belt out the words to ‘Thank U, Next’ as you drive home, all the while your penis is shrinking away. The song ends as you pull into your driveway and as the last note plays, your penis disappears forever. You walk into your house a full woman and scurry up to your room to get changed into something more comfortable. Once you’re changed you send a text to Colin from Psych, “You free to hang out later? Work was boring and I want to have some fun tonight!” You snap a quick picture of yourself so he knows exactly what you mean. You smile in excitement and turn the music up, this summer is going to be a fun one!
